Agrigento

 

Founded around 581 BC, with the name of Akragas from rhodo-Cretan geloi. It reached its peak in the fifth century BC, before the decline started by the war with Carthage. During the Punic wars it was conquered by the Romans, who Latinized the name in Agrigentum. Agrigento is world famous for its Valley of the Temples, which has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1997.
